The Meaning Crisis
We’re all pretty aware there’s a crisis of meaning.
While science didn’t intend to disprove god—and technically, it still hasn’t—what it has proved is how vast and irrational the universe can be sometimes.
Questioning the beliefs given to you by other people is as simple as searching up the opposite of said beliefs on the internet, then getting sucked into an echo chamber.
Then, when the next echo chamber presents itself through your algorithm, you start questioning the previous echo chamber’s validity.
In a world that allows you to convince yourself that almost anything might be true, spending most of your time isolated, not participating in meaningful discussions with groups to meet solid ground, the floor in which your feet are placed will always feel like jello.
As a faith in God diminished, Nihilism—the idea that our lives have no objective meaning—started to become the norm.
And this spawned two different philosophies: Existentialism, and Absurdism.
Existentialism (depending on where you read about it) is the philosophy that our lives have no inherent meaning, and it is up to you as the individual to create your own meaning out of all of this.
If you’re looking to explore more about existentialism, I recommend the works of Jean-Paul Sartre, such as his book, Being and Nothingness.
But what if you can’t convince yourself that any of this has meaning?
Enter: Absurdism.
The most famous writer on absurdist ideas as a philosophy is Albert Camus.
In his book, The Myth Of Sisyphus, he gives his arguments about why trying to find meaning in the meaninglessness is escaping what life really is, and deluding yourself.
In his words: “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”
By this, he doesn’t mean to ruin your life, knock down street signs and dance naked on the highway (although you could.)
No, he actually sees attaching no meaning to your existence, and dancing through the despair as an affirmation and rebellion of one’s fate.
In another one of his books, The Rebel, He writes:
“One must accept the unacceptable and hold to the untenable… From absolute despair will spring infinite joy, from blind servitude, unbounded freedom. To be free is, precisely, to abolish ends. The innocence of the ceaseless change of things, as soon as one consents to it, represents the maximum liberty. The free mind willingly accepts what is necessary.”
Do more things without a purpose. Don’t attach meaning to any of it if that only brings you more turmoil. Rebel against a world that tries to put down your meaninglessness and see it as negative. All of this is absurd, and it doesn’t need to be anything more, nor less than that.
So, how do you find meaning in a meaningless world?
You don’t. Instead, you dance through it.
This is the greatest act of rebellion of them all.
